The Children on the Hill

1978: Dr. Helen Hildreth is a renowned psychiatrist known for her compassion towards patients and at home, she's known as a grandmother - one passionate about teaching her grandchildren, Vi and Eric, how to take care of themselves. She is passionate about teaching them how to care for their belongings, craft delicious meals, and showing what healthy relationships are through love and attention. One day, she turns their world upside down when she brings home a child - Iris, whose nature is silent and skittish, whose behaviour is nothing like Vi has witnessed before.

Vi doesn't care that Iris is different or that she's now part of her life because Iris is a new playmate, a new addition to the Monsters Club she and Eric created. The club is dedicated to creating monsters and figuring out what defeats them. Before long, Iris transforms and the silent, terrified girl she was slowly slips away and she becomes a tight trio with Eric and Vi. They do everything together, from watching drive-in movies to hunting monsters because as Vi explains, monsters are everywhere.

2019: Lizzy Shelly, host of the popular podcast Monsters Among Us is heading to Vermont to find the monster that abducted a young girl. Lizzy knows better than most that monsters are not something of fantasy, monsters are real and her sister is one of them.

Daphne

It is Kit Lamb's last summer before college. It is the last summer with her high school basketball team and her best friend, Dana. It is the last summer before her life begins. But the night before the big game, one of her teammates tells the tale of Daphne - a girl who attended their school years ago and who died, under mysterious circumstances. Some say Daphne was murdered. Some say she died by her own hand. Some say she is a killer. They all agree that she's still out there, waiting for revenge and ready to kill whenever someone thinks of her.

After the ghostly tale, Kit's teammates disappear, one by one, and Kit begins to think the stories are real and that her fear, her own mind, is conjuring Daphne. To protect her friends and herself, she must race against the clock to find the truth behind the legend before the summer becomes the last one of her life.

Dead Silence

Claire Kovalik is on her final mission, days away from being unemployed - her position now obsolete - when her repair ship picks up a distress signal. With nothing to lose and no desire to return to Earth early, Claire and her team respond. What they find at the other end of the signal is something of a dream. It is the Aurora, a famous luxury space-liner that vanished on its maiden voyage more than twenty years ago. A salvage claim like this could set them up for life. It is only when they board the ship they realise their discovery is not a dream but a nightmare.

There are whispers in the dark, warnings written in blood, and flickers of movement that cannot be explained. To survive and return home victorious, Claire must fight to hold on to her sanity and find out what really happened on the Aurora, otherwise she and her crew may meet the same ghastly fate of those before them.

From Below

Hidden hundreds of feet below the surface is the wreckage of the SS Arcadia whose remains have just been discovered. The vessel disappeared long ago without a trace on their routine voyage - a garbled distress signal the only thing that indicated something was amiss. It was thought the SS Arcadia had been lost to history, until it was found more than 300 miles away from its travel path, as if it had been patiently waiting for its silent graveyard to be found.

Cove and her team have been granted permission to explore the wreck with the goal in mind of examining, documenting, and hopefully discovering why the ship sank. Unbeknownst to them, the SS Arcadia is not done filling its graveyard; something sinister watches them from the shadows. With no light, little air, and no simple escape, it is up to them to find a way to survive or succumb to the horrors awaiting them below.

Gallows Hill

Despite the winery's long-standing family legacy, when Margot inherits the business after her parents sudden departure, she wants nothing to do with it. The winery may be known for its unparalleled product but she can't ignore what else it's known for - being built on the grounds where hundreds of convicts were once hanged nor can she ignore the whispers that the ground is cursed. There is a reason why Margot hasn't returned to her childhood home in over a decade and now that she's alone in the dilapidated building, she begins to believe the curse is more than a rumour and that she may be the next victim to fall prey to the cursed grounds.

Then the richest and most powerful families begin to arrive but unlike before, they don't leave. Unknown to the employees, Karloff has been selling shares in the resort, marketing it as an end-of-the-world oasis for the best of the best.

And to ensure the best of the best's needs are catered too, the employees will be at their beck and call - whether they like it or not. What Karloff Country didn't account for was Jay and his crew and how far they'll go to save themselves and uncover the truth. What's more dangerous: The monster you know or the unknown nightmare outside?

His drawings start out as standard five-year-old drawings until the day he draws a man dragging a woman's lifeless body into the woods. From that drawing forward, Teddy begins creating sinister and uncomfortable drawings transforming from his usual stick figures into highly detailed and lifelike figures - drawings that a five-year-old should not be capable of.

Mallory suspects his drawings aren't his and that a supernatural force is lingering around Teddy and using him as messenger. With the help of an eccentric neighbour and a handsome landscaper, Mallory sets out to decipher the images and save Teddy before it's too late.

| Leech

The Interprovincial Medical Institute has exploded over the centuries by taking root in adolescent minds and shaping them to be doctors helping eliminate and replace all human practitioners of medicine. The purpose of the Institute is to help humanity; they exist to protect humans from the horrors their ancestors released.

In an isolated chateau far north, the baron's doctor has died and his replacement has one mystery to solve, how the Institute lost track of one of its own bodies. It is in the frozen north where the Institute will discover a competitor vying for top spot on the evolutionary ladder - a parasite, spreading through the baron's castle leaving secrets, violence, and fear in its wake. The two will wage war with the human body as battlegrounds and whichever wins, means humanity has lost again.

Lute

Year after year, good fortune, good weather, and good health find those that live on the island of Lute. The inhabitants live happy, superior lives, unscathed by the war that rages across the water. It is only fair that to remain blessed, every seven years, seven people must be sacrificed to honour the island and its gifts.

It is Nina Treadway's first time attending The Day. Born in Florida, her marriage to Lord Treadway has brought her to Lute as her husband's family are protectors of the island. Nina doesn't believe in The Day; she's heard about it of course, but it's all superstitious nonsense told to keep newcomers and youngsters in line.

And then The Day begins and Nina discovers that the "nonsense" is real. All the sacrifices, the horror, the loss is real but so is the sense of community, of survival, of love. When the day ends, Nina - and Lute - will never be the same.

Mary: An Awakening of Terror

Mary is an unremarkable woman who blends into the background. She is a woman who lives a plain life but things within her are slowly shifting and plain she is no more. Mary is experiencing hot flashes, body aches, and fainting spells she previously wasn't prone too but more terrifying than that is she is starting to hear voices that urge her towards unspeakable acts.

Fired from her job, Mary moves from New York back to her hometown with one goal in mind: Find herself again. What comes with her return are more changes: Terrifying visions, mutilation, and thoughts she is now compelled to write down. Thoughts that upon reflection, mirror the experiences of an infamous serial killer.

Then the killings begin. Again.

Road of Bones

The Road of Bones is a 1200 mile-long stretch of road in the heartland of Siberia, where temperatures in the area can drop sixty degrees below zero and where the road is littered with Soviet gulags, gulags that bring with them their history of pain and thousands of prisoner deaths. Pain and bodies that are currently buried underneath the 1200 miles of road.

Felix Teigland, or "Teig," is a documentarian who recently learned about the Road of Bones, or Kolyma Highway as its properly named, and realises the untapped potential it has to be a phenomenal document regarding history, culture, and mythology centred around the road. But when the team arrives at Akhust, the coldest settlement on earth to film part of their documentary, they find the village abandoned excluding one nine-year-old girl and a pack of predatory wolves. Chaos of paranormal and dangerous nature ensue.

Suburban Hell

With a unique take on horror, Suburban Hell is a comedic horror story set in a traditional American cul-de-sac. A cul-de-sac that Amy Fosters considers herself lucky to live in. After her move from the city, she was relieved to find not only a place to live but also a place within the neighbourhood. At their monthly wine night: Liz, Jess, Melissa, and Amy agree that a She-Shed, a space just for them, could and should be built in Liz's backyard.

Except, the night they christen the She-Shed, things feel off. What they expected from their new space was to shed stress, not where they would release a demonic force that soon takes claim on the neighbourhood. Even the calmest of them can't justify the strange happenings. From moving dolls, burn marks, and a pungent smell that follows their now possessed friend, Liz, they must work together to fight evil, save Liz, and save their neighbourhood... before it goes to hell.

Sundial

Rob grew up craving a normal life and she almost had it too with her suburban house, husband, and two kids but her eldest ruins the normalcy she craves. Callie collects small bones and whispers to imaginary friends and her antics remind Rob of the life and family she left behind in Sundial. With her strange nature, it is time for Rob to return to Sundial and the Mojave desert, this time with Callie, knowing that when she arrives she will have to make a terrible choice. Callie is worried by the strange looks her mother gives her and when taken on a spontaneous road trip, Callie fears that only one of them will return home.

The Violence

Married to her high school sweetheart, mother to two beautiful daughters, and keeper of a pristine home; Chelsea Martin is the perfect housewife - or so it seems. Chelsea's life is a prison. Her husband has abused her for so long that her independent life turned to one of dependency and there is nowhere for her to turn, not even to her mother whose only concern is family appearances, not its well-being. Chelsea is terrified her children will become trapped like her and she has no clue how to move forward, that is until a mysterious illness appears.

The illness is known as The Violence, and causes those infected to experience sudden and explosive bouts of rage attacking anyone in their path. A terrifying illness for most but to Chelsea, the chaos the virus is causing is an opportunity, an opportunity to liberate herself from her abuser and allow her children to be set free.

The Watchers

Mina's car, like all the others that cross the tree line, breaks. The forest she breaks down in is not on any map and within are creatures who can see you but cannot be seen. Stranded and with no place to go but through the forest for help, Mina is forced into the dark only to be met by a woman screaming, urging her to find safety in a concrete bunker whose doors lock upon her arrival.

Mina soon finds herself trapped inside the bunker in a room designed to be watched. It contains one wall of glass and lights that only activate at night, right when her captors come to watch. These creatures, the Watchers, observe their captives and Mina soon discovers that those who don't make it to the bunker before nightfall, fall prey to a worse fate than hers. Terrified and trapped, Mina is desperate for answers. Who are the Watchers? Why has she been imprisoned? And why are they so interested in her every move?

What Moves the Dead

What Moves the Dead is a retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's short story, "The Fall of the House of Usher," that is poised to fill you with fear. The House of Usher is a home of nightmares. With abnormal fungal growth, possessed wildlife, an ominous lake, and strange acting inhabitants, it is up to three to determine why. Alex Easton along with a mycologist and an American doctor must work together to uncover the secrets behind the House of User to save the inhabitants, including his childhood best friend and former comrade before the house consumes them all.

White Horse

There are those in this world who are haunted in more ways than one and Kari James is one of those people. As an Urban Native, her life has been defined by heavy metal, ripped jeans, Stephen King novels and an occasional beer at her local bar. When her cousin finds an heirloom belonging to her mother, the bracelet calls upon her mother's ghost and a monstrous entity. The life that defined her is no more and Kari is now haunted by visions of her mother and the creature she released.

Kari must search for what happened to her mother all those years ago and the closest to her can't help. Her father, disabled from a car crash, can't help; her aunt knows something but won't give it up; and her best friend is eager to help but finding time away from her abusive husband is harder than it looks. It is this journey towards truth long denied that forces her to acknowledge her dysfunctional relationships, pain from childhood loss, and her deep desire for the one thing she could never have.

I am ready to read all of the novels on this list and I hope you are too. I have read four on this list so far and highly highly recommend Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak - absolutely phenomenal and What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher which is all about fungi and horrors that await. Find a new horror release from 2022 to read and if you have other 2022 horror suggestions, let me know in the comments. I am always eager for a fright... in a book, never real life.
