Good Girl, Bad Blood by Holly Jackson | A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder #2

In Reviews by AsterLeave a Comment

The true crime documentary detailing the solving of Andie Bell's murder wraps up Pip's detective days in a neat little bow. She is done solving mysteries making a promise to herself to stop investigating crimes; Pip is no longer a detective.

A promise Pip must break when Jamie Reynolds, the older brother of a close friend, goes missing the night of the six year anniversary of Andie and Sal's deaths.

The police won't do anything and it is up to Pip to find Jamie starting her on a mystery that leads to the uncovering of more dirty secrets hidden in the town. All Pip hopes is they find Jamie before it's too late.

| Why Good Girl, Bad Blood Is Worth Your Time

Good Girl, Bad Blood is the sequel to A Good Girl's Guide to Murder and is up to par with the first novel on if its worth your time. It absolutely is; Good Girl, Bad Blood is a story that will grow on you and provides you the ability to further explore Pip and her world.

I would not say it's better than A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, it is just different. Pip is still at the forefront but less of her voice is heard compared to the first novel and the Capstone project is switched out for podcast excerpts instead. This creates a bit more a disconnect between Pip and her detective thoughts as the podcast is not her thoughts but instead her thoughts plus personal testimonies and further trial-based discussion; this can be seen as either a good or bad thing dependent on what you like in a novel. That's why I say it's just different and based on how this is written, both are strong ways to tell Pip's story.

Good Girl, Bad Blood grows on you so do not be dissuaded by the beginning which I feel was a bit lacklustre. Do not worry, the novel picks up in pace, insanity, and excitement making it a novel worth your time and a worthy sequel.

| Plot Progression

Absolutely fantastic. It starts slow with the disappearance of Jamie Reynold's, her friend Connor's brother and someone she has known since childhood. His disappearance is unusual and with Connor's insistence, she takes the case to help the family find Jamie before something tragic happens.

Moving through Pip's life, you join her on her discovery to find Jamie and the subsequent realisation that nothing is as it seems. The plot picks up in pace and does a superb job linking the first story with the second continuing the world building and, the insanity within this tiny town.

I personally am very content I do not live in Pip's home town but am also very excited to read more about it when the third novel, As Good as Dead is released.

| Characters

Good Girl, Bad Blood has all the same characters from before but with a bit more Connor as it is his brother who is missing. What we need to focus on in this character review is Pip and the stunning character growth she has in this novel.

Her growth truly represents somebody in the limelight, somebody who wants justice, somebody whose experienced pain, and somebody who is growing through it all. I really feel her growth was beautifully done and is why these characters continue to be worth your time.

| Ending

This ending has set up the third novel perfectly. I am SO EAGER for As Good as Dead and you will be too after reading that ending.

| My Thoughts

WARNING: Skip My Thoughts for a spoiler free review.

Good Girl, Bad Blood by Holly Jackson grew on me. The first novel set up the scene for this sequel and in my previous review, I stated I wanted expansion of already introduced characters and that is exactly what I got. Yay! What I did not realise I would want in this sequel is Pip's growth; I grew (like Pip) to appreciate it and how her transformation reflected the gritty reality we live in where rapists walk free and vigilante justice might serve one person but hurt another. It did not brush over how choices and decisions can affect a person and I feel Pip's growth portrayed that properly and is why I valued it when reading.

Pip changed and grew into herself. She questioned the world, herself, where her loyalties lied, and so on. She truly grew as many of us do in our late teens and transformed into an individual who felt more sure of herself and what she demanded in life. As you can tell, Pip's growth was a strong point of this novel for me.

At the beginning, I felt it was too convenient for Jamie to go missing so quickly after Pip's previous solve but, it was okay because how Stanley's background was written in the first novel, set up the ground work for this to start so quickly and then immediately become insanity.

That ending though, I cannot wait for the next novel to see how Pip evolves and hopefully heals from the shooting. But damn, for a YA novel that I feel portrayed itself as a fun sleuth read, hit hard in a lot of ways but also was able to create a fun and enticing story for me to read. In all, fantastic novel and I cannot wait for more works by Jackson.
