Klara is an Artificial Friend. She watches from within the store those that come to browse, she is an AF highly optimised for observation and one who hopes one day to be chosen.  Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro explores the world of science fiction and the question, what does it mean to love?

| Why Klara and the Sun Is Worth Your Time

Klara and the Sun is a science fiction/dystopian novel about an Artificial Friend and the sun. The brief description of the novel may lead you to think, what is this really about? It truly is about Klara and the customer that chooses her. The novel details the journey of one AF with outstanding observational qualities and her chosen destiny.

I found this novel to be a pleasant read and think it is worth an hour of your time. If you are eager to read something futuristic and devour a novel with hidden clues, then Klara and the Sun is for your. This is a comforting novel and one worth curling up underneath a blanket to read.

| Plot Progression

The plot starts and ends with Klara. The beginning begins in an AF store where Klara waits for the perfect customer to take her home. That customer is found and then Klara's duties begin. She is an AF dedicated to observing, caring, and being friends with the one who takes her home but the plot expands upon that brining in the family, the world, and the potential for what the future can hold.

The plot is linear and has an evident start, middle, and end but is not disconnected making the journey understandable and nice to enjoy. It is a sweet plot that I enjoyed and is why I say it is worth your time.

Klara and the Sun was a pleasant read. I listened to the novel on audio and found no disadvantage listening instead of reading finding myself comfortably comforted by this novel. It undoubtedly has sinister undertones of how technology was fractioning the world which is seen through the concept of being lifted. I believe that being lifted means to have genetic alterations to enhance yourself or put yourself at an educational advantage but I am not 100% certain.

The novel combined a post sci-fi world with modern-day and I feel the world Klara and the Sun was set in mimics what is to come in the future. The change was alluded to when the Father and Ms. Helen discussed how where they lived in the countryside would not be peaceful for much longer indicating infrastructure and technological change. There seemed to be many subtle moments as a reader you needed to pick up on to truly understand the shift in the world but through Klara's eyes, none of the change mattered because her only focus was Josie.

I liked the relationship between Klara and Josie and how Klara was presented to be a different and more observant AF. I liked the relationship between her and the Sun and the ambiguity of the Sun's true role in Josie's recovery. Did the Sun actually help Josie get better? I am going think to be so. It was Klara's persistence that helped Josie heal so in the end, she fulfilled her aim of supporting and taking care of her friend.

The ending was bittersweet. It was a full circle for Klara to end up with the manager again and also simultaneously provided insight into where AF's and technology went to fade away. Klara's life was full in this novel, she lived a life she was proud of and the ending put a smile on my face. Through this novel I was able to bask in Klara's journey and I am happy I read this novel.
