A child's potential is measured by a quotient (Q). A high enough Q means prestigious state schooling and a track towards a bright future. A low enough Q means federal schooling and a guaranteed limitation of future success. With continuous testing provided to measure a child's Q, it is a teacher's job to focus on creating strong and intelligent students whilst ensuring the educational structure remains standing.
Elena Fairchild is one of those teacher's at a prestigious state school. She is married to the man who helped create the system. She believes in the system but when her nine-year-old fails another standardised test and is sent to a federal boarding school far away from her family and friends, what will Elena do? Watch as her trust in the tiered educational system shifts after it takes one of her own. Elena will do anything to get her back, even the impossible.
| Why Master Class Is Worth Your Time
Master Class by Christina Dalcher is a 2020 sci-fi dystopian novel that you absolutely should read. It is a fast-paced, extremely fast-paced, novel guaranteed to get your heart racing; you will not be able to put down.
If you are a fan of science fiction or dystopian novels, then that makes Master Class an even better suggestion for you to read. As dystopian novels are right up my alley, I can confidently say this one is up to par with other dystopians I have read but not as fantastic as The Hunger Games. It is probably a step below that but way way above other dystopians.
Master Class takes the concept of an improved society to the extreme (think history repeating itself) to create a novel worth reading and one that will not take you too long to finish.
| Plot Progression
| Characters
Master Class is told through Elena Fairchild's eyes. She is a teacher at a Silver School (the most prestigious school tier) who wholly believes in the improved education system until her nine-year-old bombs a test and is sent far away to a lower-tier school to learn.
The story could not have been told by anyone else. Without Elena, Master Class would not be a good novel. The characters improve the plot and drive it forward and Elena is a character you will value.
| World Building
There is limited world building in Master Class. The world mimics the current one we live in except schools, and society to a degree, are tiered based on a person's intellect.
You are able to learn how this dystopia was created via flashbacks and because the world is only slightly different, the limited amount of world building works and you will be satisfied with its explanation and exploration.

| My Thoughts
WARNING: Skip My Thoughts for a spoiler free review.
Master Class was an absolute banger! Everything about this novel was great. From the plot, the characters, to details - I am in love with it. Dalcher took the concept of creating a Master Race or Master Class as the title aptly states and went ham creating a delectable sci-fi dystopian novel.
What I enjoyed most about the novel was that Elena was the creation and destruction of this system. She was the catalyst on both ends and I felt that was an interesting mirror. You can both create and destruct.
There is not much else to say except I truly enjoyed this novel and cannot wait to read more dystopians in 2021 so I can forget about the current pandemic we are living in. Yippie.
