The newly wed couple, Sam and Annie, have recently relocated to the sleepy suburbs of New York. It is here where Sam sets up his new practice and where  Annie spends hours alone whilst her husband tends to his mostly female clientele.

Little does Sam know his private sessions can be heard through a vent in the ceiling and who could resist listening? All is well until a new patient arrives and one day Sam doesn't return home from work.

| Why Goodnight Beautiful Is A Hit Or Miss

This psychological thriller is a hit or miss novel. Goodnight Beautiful is a hit because of the beginning; it contains a start that will captivate you through the narrative, desire, and determination radiating from it.

From page 100ish onwards, this novel is a miss. It turns from something psychologically intense into something predictable. You will know what is about to occur and will wish there was more depth to the plot and characters.

If you are searching for a light thriller with an easy to guess ending, this is a hit and worth your time. If you are searching for something more intense that has the potential to give you chills, this is a miss and We Begin at the End or Home Before Dark may be worth your time instead.

| Plot Progression

I found the plot to be a mixed bag and I think you will too. The plot starts with one narrator consistently telling the story and then abruptly delves into three. It creates separation and I feel this plot required continuity to be more exciting.

A plot that is not predictable and then... BAM! A switch is flipped and you will know everything that is going on. Overall, average plot with a few solid moments of excitement.

| Characters

Without giving away names, one out of three of the main narrators is enticing. Take that as you will.

| Ending

Expected. Goodnight Beautiful has an expected ending but does contain a nice message of progress which suits the overall storyline well. A hit or miss novel on all criteria that books are reviewed at Aster's Book Hour.

| My Thoughts

WARNING: Skip My Thoughts for a spoiler free review.

Goodnight Beautiful by Aimee Molloy contained a solid beginning which captivated me up to Part III of the novel. After, everything was predictable and a bit anticlimactic. With how enticing the beginning was with an unreliable narrator and then bam, the unreliable narrator that drove the story well disappeared and I was presented with three viewpoints. I think it may have suited the story and increased the insanity of it, if the whole thing had been told via Albert's POV.

When Sam began to psychoanalyse him and the police dismissed Annie, I felt the story became a bit unrealistic. The police had probable cause to search the house because a person was missing, so why didn't they? Why didn't Sam stab Albert with a knife and escape? Leading off that, how did Annie recover so easily from being hit in the head with a shovel? A shovel! Plus, Albert willing paid off their debts and set them up for life, it was all too neatly wrapped in a bow for me.

Goodnight Beautiful contains a gripping beginning with energy I wish had continued through the whole novel. An easy read with no in-depth narrative necessary and not a novel I would recommend to friends.
