False Memory Syndrome is driving victims mad. Memories planted into their brain of lives they never lived. NYC Cop Barry Sutton is investigating the phenomenon with the hope of discovering answers.

Helen Smith, neuroscientist, and the most informed individual on the disease has dedicated her life to creating technology that lets individuals re-live their most precious moments. As Helen continues her pursuit towards success, the fabric of the past and present being to unravel and present day life turns into something nobody could have predicted.

How can either make a stand against False Memory Syndrome when life is crumbling around them?

| Why Recursion Is Worth Your Time

Recursion by Blake Crouch is a 2019 sci-fi thriller about parallel universes and implanted memories. Crouch tackles complicated scientific theoreticals and then expands upon them in a way you would not think possible. This novel is worth a read because it takes that one specific nagging thought you have about the potential of parallel universes and runs with it.

This is a recommended read for sci-fi lovers, Blake Crouch fanatics, and those interested in reading fiction with an intense expansion upon theoreticals. Recursion is easy to breeze through whilst maintaining integrity and intrigue. A novel worth your time.

| Plot Progression

With a plot told from different points of views and different times, Recursion is a comfortable read. Novels that intertwine the past with the present or jump between years have the propensity to be confusing, Recursion's changing shifts are not. Crouch did a great job incorporating past with present with future with past with present and onwards fitting them seamlessly into the pace to create a decent plot.

This writing style makes the story flow and though the plot is slower than his other works, it leads to an understandable ending and a sense of contentment upon finishing. It is not the most stellar plot written but is written cleanly and will not disappoint you especially if you are a sci-fi lover.

| Characters

There are three main characters that drive Recursion: Barry, Helena, and Slade. All have vastly different purposes in life and experiences with False Memory Syndrome.

The characters may be were Recursion falls flat for you as you never truly become connected to them. It is enjoyable look into their world but there never is a full immersion via the characters. You don't become them, you don't truly feel for them, they are just a solid literary component. There were clear villains and heroes making it easy to know who to root for.

| Ending

Recursion has an ending worth discussing. This is a novel I deem wonderful for book club; I deem any novel with a thought-provoking ending worthy of book club. I was confused on elements of the ending so if you do read Recursion, let me know in the comments below what you thought. This novel is definitely a great sci-fi thriller with a solid characters, plot, and ending making this worth your time. Everything I have currently read by Blake Crouch is worth your time.

| My Thoughts

WARNING: Skip My Thoughts for a spoiler free review.

I have to say it, I think Blake Crouch is a great writer. With his ability to take theoretical concepts I only have ever thought about in the passing and turn them into the source of his novels amazes me. Recursion is all about different timelines and the ability to change the past by putting your consciousness into your past self. Say whaaatttt?

Crouch took the concept of time travel and made it scientifically believable and my goodness, I hope this never becomes a reality. The concept of a ripple effect is so so true and his play on that in Recursion and the overall interpretation of these concepts made this a great read. It makes all of his writings unique from others because I can see it happening centuries later.

I think this is a well written novel with a strong scientific backing and has an understandable plot progression via Helena's desire to help her Mum with Alzheimer's. I will admit, certain moments bored me in the novel. I felt I could skip certain instances but maybe that was the point? It was briefly mentioned in the novel that life has mundane moments and maybe Recursion was meant to mirror that? Or maybe I'm reading into it and the novel could have been shortened.

I was also confused by the ending, the explanation of how they were able to go back in time linearly made sense but I wish there had been more exploration of how Barry was able to go back to the "original" timeline and how the "dead memories" was reset. Then, I think the ending would have been wrapped up more nicely.

I enjoyed reading this and will continue to read other novels by Blake Crouch but unlike the Wayward pines series, will not re-read Recursion.
