Coopers Chase is a peaceful retirement village home to four unlikely friends. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahaim, and Ron meet every Thursday to discuss unsolved murders. It is a pastime they enjoy and when a local developer is found dead, they jump into action at the possibility of solving a live case.

But as the bodies begin to pile up, can they find the killer before it's too late?

| Why The Thursday Murder Club Is A Hit Or Miss

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman is a novel you will either love or feel nothing about, there is no between. Hundreds of people praise this novel and yet, I don't agree with their sentiment.

This novel is worth your time if you enjoy reading popular books, are craving something light-hearted,  or are a fan of Richard Osman. The Thursday Murder Club contains an above average plot, a decent ending, and has characters you will enjoy.

The Thursday Murder Club is a miss, as in maybe it is worth skipping if you like exciting mysteries and value connecting to characters. The novel lacks depth and leaves you wanting more from it.

This is a hit or miss novel and it is up to you to determine if it is worth your time.

| Plot Progression

The Thursday Murder Club contains an interesting writing style. It has short chapters then long and fluctuates between Joyce's diary and realtime events. This writing style is a great reason to read the novel because it creates dynamic and entices you to read onwards.

I liked the short chapters and think you will too because it provided little snippets of multiple characters and that was absolutely needed to propel the story forward.

Now, the plot is slow. It is a bit pedantic at certain points and there may be moments you want to skip because honestly, the novel could have been cut down by 50 pages plus to create a cozier mystery.

Furthering the narrative that this is a hit or miss is the plot. There are pro's and there are con's to it dependent on your reading preferences.

| Characters

You will like the characters but you will not connect to them. There is Ibrahaim, Ron, Elizabeth, Joyce, Chris, and Donna as the main crew and then roughly 7 more secondary characters you need to know.

There are a lot of pieces and people in play which I felt detracted from the novel and is why the characters are a miss. The little snippets were necessary to push the plot but detracted from the ability to connect to the characters. There was not enough insight into these individuals BUT I will give this a grain of salt as it is a miss now but with a sequel in the works, further development of the characters will occur meaning the sequel may be boss and prop this story up to set the scene.

| Ending

I am still confused by the ending. If you decide to read The Thursday Murder Club, please let me know in the comments how straightforward you thought the ending was because for me, it was a nightmare.

I got it in the end (haha) and after I understood it, I thought it was decent. Not what you would imagine for a particularly easy read and is why the ending is a hit for this novel.

| My Thoughts

WARNING: Skip My Thoughts for a spoiler free review.

I really felt this novel was a bit lacklustre, a beach read one could say. I felt no true connection to the characters, found the plot a bit simple, and overall it became a drag towards the end. I struggled to finish this novel.

I don't have many thoughts on this piece of literature because it did not leave an impression on me. A simple read and that's that.
