Rachel's son has recovered from JX5, a virus most don't survive. The miraculous recovery of her son Billy has her crying in relief and when he begins to mention an imaginary friend, Delfy, she thinks nothing of it. Her son is alive and that's all that matters.

Billy begins to act out, his excuse for the behaviour that the voice in his head is making him do it and Rachel believes him. Soon, Delfy threatens to tear the family apart and after getting Billy back, Rachel will do anything in her power to protect her children, even from themselves.

| Why We Hear Voices Is A Hit or Miss

This is a pandemic based novel, if you do not want to read a novel regarding that subject then We Hear Voices is a miss. Skip - move on. It should be noted that the pandemic aspect is not a major component of the novel; it is present and it does shape the inhabitants of the world but not the world itself. The universe they live in and potentially our future if we don't get our act together, is one of disarray because humans destroyed the environment. The pandemic exacerbates the turmoil on Earth and is something to keep in mind if you want to read We Hear Voices.

The reason this is a hit is because it has solid writing. There is no halted dialogue or confusing moments (well... maybe just one), that will leave you slogging through the novel. It is a modern day horror novel that is either a hit or miss but is only a miss because our future potential is quite clearly in this novel and that is sometimes terrifying to read about.

| Plot Progression

Good. The plot is good. There are many hidden elements that the further along you are in the novel, the more critical you realise those mundane moments were. We Hear Voices contains a full circle plot, you will enjoy it immensely when reading but for the concept of a dangerous virus and scary demon-like voices, the plot is relatively tame.

Luckily it does live up to its classification as a horror genre-based novel as there are moments that will give you chills but overall, quite mild in suspense and thrills.

| Characters

Rachel and Graham are the voices of this story. Rachel is the mother of Billy whose recovery brought with it a voice and Graham, a Doctor who studies those voices.

Together, along with Rachel's daughter Nina, the story is told. With three varying viewpoints from three different aspects of the pandemic, you glean insight into the virus and what family love can accomplish.

You will not be disappointed by characters like these and Nina - she is a gem.

| Ending

We Hear Voices has an ending that is either a hit or miss. I found it to be a miss as I craved a more conclusive structural ending. You may enjoy the ambiguity, it is definitely an ending to discuss.

| My Thoughts

WARNING: Skip My Thoughts for a spoiler free review.

Like A Cloud of Outrageous Blue, the novel I read before We Hear Voices by Evie Green, I thought this was going to be a DNF. I have yet to read Station Eleven which I received as a present a month before the pandemic because I couldn't bring myself to read about our reality and is why when I picked up We Hear Voices, I almost put it right back down. The blurb was interesting enough that I decided it was my personal time to read about a pandemic again.

The story is barely even focused on the pandemic. There are snippets of it but the plot focuses on the voices. Creepy voices that make children do things nobody understands. I highly enjoyed We Hear Voices until the last four chapters when the voices "disappeared."

Combined with that ending... I have a lot of questions. What did the alien race want? Why did they hitch a ride on children instead of adults? It was stated they were frustrated by the limitations of children so why not adults? So many questions and such an ambiguous ending that I hated.

I ended frustrated upon finishing this and mulling is 100% necessary to see if the ending grows on me. Update: It did not. I did not like the ending.
