Home Before Dark by Riley Sager is a horror-filled novel revolving around Maggie Holt and Baneberry Hall, a home Maggie has yet to return to since the fateful night ghosts sent them running.

It is impossible for Maggie to forget that night or the horrors that filled Baneberry Hall; how could anybody forget it when their father's claim to fame is a non-fiction novel of their time at the Hall. A novel filled with ghosts and hauntings - concepts that defy reality. Concepts that Maggie absolutely does not believe in. Her parents have made her promise to never return to Baneberry Hall stating what happened in the novel is fact, not fiction and Maggie abides by this promise until the day her father passes away and leaves her Baneberry Hall in his will.

As a professional home renovator and ghost-denier, Maggie returns to Baneberry Hall to flip the property and denounce her parent's beliefs. Ghosts can't be real and Maggie has nothing to be afraid of. That is, until strange occurrences begin and Maggie is left wondering if what her father wrote is actually the truth.

| Why Home Before Dark Is Worth Your Time

Home Before Dark is a thrilling ghost story following Maggie and the haunted Baneberry Hall. Her family fled in the middle of the night and haven't returned since. Maggie is determined to uncover the secrets her father's been hiding and finally disprove the ghosts. But when she returns, so do the noises and from there, you are sucked into Home Before Dark.

This is a spellbinding ghost story which will keep you awake, either from fear or excitement - it is a novel that once you pick it up, you will have to finish it immediately.

| Plot Progression

Home Before Dark is two stories in one. It goes between the House of Horrors, the novel her father wrote, and modern-day life. These stories intertwine to help you uncover the secrets behind Baneberry Hall and its history that has plagued Maggie her whole life.

Sager connects these two stories with decent fluidity, you will enjoy going between the stories to determine the truth behind that terrifying night. Certain moments are bound to give you goosebumps!

| Characters

These are great characters, I was not disappointed. I appreciated how there was legitimate suspicion surrounding the Hall and House of Horrors leaving you wondering who believed in the hauntings. You might find Maggie's actions slightly improbable but other than that, the characters were realistic and will not disappoint.

| Ending

To sum it up, intriguing. This is an ending you will be satisfied with.

| My Thoughts

Home Before Dark is a wild ride. A ride riddled with ghosts, tragedy, murder, and insanity that I did not expect.

For starters, the ghosts weren't real! I had fear coursing through my veins throughout so much of this novel because of the ghosts and for them to be fake? That was a psychological mind bend. Home Before Dark scared the lights out of me when Sager mentioned Penny Face because that is creepy as anything and for goodness sake, Maggie would have never been traumatized if those two weird women stopped creeping on a little girl.

That is creepy, I did not like how quickly that was brushed over. I also did not like how her parents first reaction to finding a dead body was to flee, why would a five year old be sentenced to prison for an accident? The parents needed to get it together especially since Maggie kept on repeating, "It wasn't me."

Apart from the improbability that rationally I assume parents that find a dead body call the police instead of fleeing, I loved Home Before Dark. I was captivated throughout the whole novel and am still shaken by the fact the ghosts weren't real. CREEPY!

I enjoyed the ending where Maggie wrote her own story and empathize with her parents who were only trying to protect their child (but still... call the police). Again, all could have been avoided if two creepy women stopped leering over a child whilst she slept. And why was the secret passage way into a small bedroom instead of a more used room? Questions here, questions.

With a bit of suspended reality, Home Before Dark is a great novel bound to give you chills. A great novel, thumbs up from me.
