Piranesi lives in an extraordinary home. The corridors extend beyond what the eye can see, the rooms are larger than life and contained within are glorious statues, an unfathomable number that could never be counted. Piranesi's home is a labyrinth with a dangerous ocean nestled in the center but he is not afraid, Piranesi understands his home and to him, his world is one of  comfort.

Piranesi knows he is not alone, there is one other person with him - the Other, who Piranesi sees twice a week to discuss research and knowledge. Piranesi is happy to have the Other in the house but as Piranesi continues to explore, he begins to pick up on clues that there may be another person within the confines of his home. A person who brings with them a terrible truth and revelations of a world that Piranesi has never known.

| Why Piranesi Is Worth Your Time

Buy Piranesi. Straight up, stop reading this, scroll to the bottom, and buy it. No need for further discussion. Oh, you want to know why it's worth your money and time? Fair.

There are four reason why Piranesi by Susanna Clarke is worth your time:

  1. It is under 300 pages. A short and delightful read.
  2. The storytelling is phenomenal. Based on labyrinths and an 18th century architect, Piranesi will draw you slowly in with its beautiful imagery and unpredictable storyline. Due to its length, it is a read you will finish in one sitting allowing for full absorption of the story and not one that will require a pause to tend to other things like work or family...
  3. The emotions the labyrinth could evoke in you are indescribable.  The statues, the endless corridors, the ocean - it is such a terrifying place of beauty, you will be obsessed with it and if it makes you feel something like it did for me, the emotions it creates within are wonderful.
  4. For the story Piranesi is telling, the length is ideal. When novels are too long they drag and this was the right length for this well-rounded story and despite craving so much more, I must respect that decision to stop at the right time.

Those are the four key reasons why you should read Piranesi. I found it to be an enticing and gorgeous read. I feel this so deeply that I say skip the library and buy it. Like The Rose Code, which has been one of my top novels this year and one I believe people will read over and over again, Piranesi also falls into that category but thankfully is much shorter than The Rose Code. A novel worth your time and one I am absolutely biased towards because I truly adored every moment of it and every thought about it since.

| Plot Progression

What a wondrous creation is what you should know about the plot. You read the story through the eyes of Piranesi and his journal entries. The journal entries may put you off as journal entries can easily create division within the flow of a story but luckily in Piranesi, they do the opposite. The journal entries create a sense of present and past which propel forward an enticing and unexpected plot. Fantastic people, fantastic!

| Characters

Piranesi is the main character with the Other as a supporting character. Together, they live in the house with thousands of doors, halls, and statues, surviving and being one with the House.

Piranesi is a delightful protagonist to read and his character merges a bit of history with mystery to create a unique personality. I loved Piranesi and think you will too. You will like the shells in his hair, his carefree nature, and his ease of survival in such a dangerous home.

| Ending

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke contains an unpredictable ending completing perfectly an unpredictable story. It is an ending I believe you will enjoy. That is all - please read this novel so we can talk about it.

| My Thoughts

WARNING: Skip My Thoughts for a spoiler free review.

Piranesi is phenomenal. I am still reeling from how fantastic that read was. I wish it had been so much longer and it is here where I need to take a step back and realise my biggest gripe with so many novels is that they should have been condensed and is why it is probably a good thing Piranesi stopped where it did.

I found so much value in how the story was told. Initially I was not captivated by the weird breaks based on a strange journal based calendar system but as old ones flowed into new ones my view changed and I found myself flowing with the journal entries. The entries were short and choppy and then long and winded and the divide never stopped the flow. It created a wave that - it pulled me in.

I enjoyed every single aspect of this novel. I was bored at the beginning but the detailed descriptions of statues and how I was able to envision the maze pulled me in and immersed me and I am so glad I continued to read because I loved this short story so much.

You are able to root for the protagonist and I found it so interesting that the protagonist was somebody else than who I initially assumed. It really played on the concept of Greek mythology and labyrinths that held Minotaurs and historical fiction about an 18th century architect called Piranesi and his "prisons." Susanna Clarke in my opinion combined mythology with history to create a fantastical story that I cannot get over.

UGH. Dude, this was amazing! I will be purchasing this novel from the bookstore, I know I will be rereading it again.
